Aims

This course aims to deliver the training required to carry out a comprehensive system of treatment of addiction problems.

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Birmingham has a clinical addictions research group that has developed a programme of work around the implementation of innovative medical and psychological treatments for addiction. Working alongside clinicians in the statutory and non-statutory services in the city, a comprehensive system of treatment of addiction problems has been developed. This course delivers this training, setting it in the context of the wider evidence base in the addictions field.

Course Overview

Programme Structure:

The Programme will be offered on a part-time basis and consist of 6x20 credit modules spread over two years with a dissertation being completed in year 3.

  • Year 1
    - Introduction to Substance Misuse
    - Management of Co-Morbid Mental Health and Substance Misuse Problems
    - Assessment, Case Management & Harm Reduction

  • Year 2
    - Building Motivation for Treatment
    - Changing Addictive Behaviours
    - Rehabilitation and Aftercare
    - Research Methods

  • Year 3
    - Research Project and Dissertation

Modules 1 and 7 will be compulsory for the full MSc course, in addition to 4 of the remaining 5 modules. In addition, students will be able to register for a PG Certificate (60 credits or 1 year) or a PG Diploma (120 credits). Modules 1 and 7 will only be compulsory for the MSc qualification.
